THE IMPORTANCE OF TIME MANAGEMENT FOR STUDENTS

Time is the school in which we learn, time is the fire in which we burn.                 - Delmore Schwartz

An aspect of life that runs out if not handled properly: time. And, its management is essential in every way and for everyone, let it be a working adult or a studious student.

Good Morning to our respected Principal, our dear teachers and my fellow friends, I, Uttarayan, am present to help you get on your feet and start to learn time’s importance and how to manage it, because it’s something that slips from our hand and into the darkness from where retrieving it is futile, unlike money or possessions which can be earned again.

First of all, what is time management? And, it doesn’t mean to take a sheet of paper, draw up a table, write some subjects you have to study every day, paste it onto the wall, and then go back to watching reels and shorts. No, it means to break your time in a way that it aligns with the completion of your work for the day and your own self-satisfaction.

Let’s have two timetables for comparison,

1:

  • Waking up and starting to meditate, visualising success as if it is in your hands at 4 AM
  • Intense workout and read a chapter before breakfast.
  • Study session until Lunch at 1 PM.
  • Having another study session and casual 30-minute breaks, as going out with a book.
  • Then, dinner at 7 PM and study session till 10:30 and the day ends.

2:

  • Waking up and freshening up at 6:30 AM.
  • Breakfast at 7 AM and then starting the study sessions with difficult topics first, 30 minutes later.
  • Balanced with a short break of either walking or listening to music after 2 hours of study, and then practice problems and mock tests till 12 PM.
  • Then have lunch and afterwards a little bit of revision, note-making, followed by a power nap.
  • Then, a little outdoor activity or trying out our hobbies during evening, and dinner at 8 PM followed by a light revision of all topics learnt throughout the day, and finally the end.

As observed, the first timetable might seem ideal for students who like procrastinating, but the 2nd one is a true winner. Then the 2nd is much more balanced to avoid burnout, while the 1st one might cause a mental crash in our mind. In the 2nd one, you can complete your work as well as avoid mental breakdowns, increasing efficiency. This is quite helpful to students who want to manage their time effectively and efficiently, but aren’t able to. But, this doesn’t mean that you have to follow the one I told you. It has to be catered to your needs, and that is why it has to be you, nobody else, who creates this success timetable.

But, planning all this is quite a hassle, if you ask me. So, the main question of this topic is, how should students plan? Well, that is for me to answer, right now. Let’s give you some tips, so it’s possible to at least draw up a rough sketch of your own manageable timetable.

  • Try to complete harder topics before going into easier topics.
  • Try to balance each study session with a walk or a nap break. You can use the Pomodoro Technique, where a 225-minutestudy session is followed by a 5-minute refreshing break. Also, breaks don’t mean you get to use your phone. Keep a limited usage time.
  • Create it as suitable and unique as you, because then you can stay consistent without procrastinating.
  • And the main thing is to stop giving excuses to yourself. Just because you weren’t able to follow it one day, doesn’t mean you won’t be able to follow it for the next few days.

And not just a manageable timetable, a balanced mindset and a ‘never-give-up’ attitude are also needed. Now, why am I here to present you with this topic? Well, it has a load of benefits, which you can enjoy if you become consistent. Let me tell you that when students manage their time as per their own capability, then they experience less stress and anxiety, no last-minute cramming and missed deadlines, visible growth in academic performance, more quality time for themselves, and it improves self-discipline, bringing out their inner sense of responsibility.

You must have heard this saying a lot of times, Work smart, not hard. And, this exact concept applies to our topic. I say that every student has the potential to succeed, has the potential to spread their own wings and take control of their own life, fate and time. Try to make every moment count, because even the smallest of actions create the biggest of personalities.

Thank you.
