A Book Review on Percy Jackson and the Olympians : The Lightning Thief
“Look, I didn’t want to be a half-blood.”
The opening line creates quite the impact on our protagonist, Percy starting with not wanting to deal with the godly stuff but gradually, starting to open up to it. The Lightning Thief is a great story, written by Rick Riordan, the #1 New York bestselling author of over 20 novels, masterfully blending Greek mythology with the contemporary world.
At an early age, he was fascinated by mostly Greek and Norse mythology and started writing stories by 13. This is one of the first books of the Percy Jackson and Olympian Series which continues onto a long journey of Percy Jackson, travelling, battling, and having fun with his friends.
Set in New York, it is based on Greek mythology, with all the 12 Olympian Gods, residing in Olympus on the 600th floor of the Empire State Building, following wherever the ‘flame’ of Western civilisation is the brightest. Each of the characters teaches us something, such as Percy, always believing in himself, even when all odds are against him, Annabeth, facing her fears, constantly pushing herself beyond her comfort zone, or Nico, who embraces his unique identity, while letting go of all his losses, showing that healing is a process that takes time. Rick Riordan presents all these characters with immense depth and relatability, which makes this journey of Percy’s interesting, even today.
Personally, my favourite character would be Nico Di Angelo, son of Hades who is the Lord of the Underworld. Yet Nico’s surname ‘Di Angelo’ in Italian, means ‘the angel’, symbolizing that light and dark are not opposing forces, that light and dark are not just meaningless creation and destruction.
Well, the plot of the Percy Jackson Series is quite fascinating yet relatable to the young teenagers of today. Not just for teenagers, it can be indulged by children and adults as well. I highly recommend giving it a read. I promise you once you start reading it, you won’t be able to put it away.
Thank you!
